Surat Thani City Pillar Shrine was built to honor and celebrate His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great, the 9th King of Thailand, on the occasion of his 50th anniversary of ascension to the throne. It was built on June 9, 1996, which starts with the number 9 and ends with the number 9, which is considered a very auspicious number.
The City Pillar Shrine is an ancient Srivijaya architecture with traces of a white concrete pavilion designed in the Srivijaya style of art, similar to Phra Borommathat Chaiya.
The "City Pillar" is carved from Chaiyaphruek wood, which is considered an auspicious wood, and is 108 inches high. The top of the pillar is carved into the shape of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva with 4 faces or 4 directions, which looks like the 4-faced Maha Brahma.
In addition to coming to pay homage for good luck, most people come to ask for blessings in business, luck, land sales, or to pass the civil service exam.
