The Tainan Museum of Taiwan Literature, located in the West Central District of Tainan City, Taiwan, is Taiwan's first national-level museum dedicated to literature and is under the management of the Ministry of Culture. Formerly the Tainan Prefecture Hall, built during the Japanese colonial period, the museum was designed by Japanese architect Matsunosuke Moriyama in 1916 and served as the administrative center of Tainan Prefecture. Damaged during World War II in 1945, it was restored after the war and later served as the Tainan City Hall. In 1992, the Cultural Construction Committee designated this site as a base for the collection and research of Taiwanese literary materials. It officially opened on October 17, 2003, was upgraded to a central government agency in 2007, and became a third-tier institution in 2021. The museum houses approximately 130,000 literary artifacts, encompassing multilingual Taiwanese literature and historical archives, making it a center for literary research and education. The Taiwan Literature Museum is divided into several exhibition areas, including the permanent exhibition "You Are Surrounded by Literature" and special exhibitions. The permanent exhibition explores the history of Taiwanese literature, from the Japanese colonial period to the present day, showcasing manuscripts, books, and multimedia materials. The special exhibition area also hosts occasional themed exhibitions, such as the "Taiwan Literature and Film Interactive Exhibition" in the summer of 2025, showcasing materials on film adaptations of literature. The museum features a reading room and multi-purpose hall, suitable for academic research or cultural activities. The building retains its Japanese style and traces of postwar restoration, making it a popular attraction for literature enthusiasts. Winter weather is cool, so a light jacket is recommended. There are rest areas and a shop within the museum, and some exhibitions may require reservations, so confirm in advance.
