Xiu Zelan Architecture Exhibition: Witnessing the Development of Taiwan's Architecture

This visit to Xiu Zelan’s architectural exhibition gave me a deeper understanding of the development of Taiwan’s architecture. Xiu Zelan is not only the first generation of female architects in Taiwan, but also an important figure who has influenced Taiwan's architectural landscape. Her works range from public construction to campus planning to the creation of modern communities, and every stage is closely linked to the development of Taiwanese society.

From railway construction to campus planning, Xiu Zelan's diverse contributions

The exhibition begins with her educational journey, introducing her experience of joining the Taiwan Railway Bureau in 1949 and participating in the planning of railway buildings such as the Old Banqiao Station. These buildings not only bear witness to the development of Taiwan’s railways, but also become the collective memory of many people.

Next, the exhibition showcased the campus buildings she designed across Taiwan. Her unique design style enabled each campus to blend in with the local environment, creating a comfortable learning space for students. These campus buildings are still in use today and have a far-reaching influence.

Overcome difficulties and create legendary buildings

What is most impressive is how Xiu Zelan overcame difficulties and successfully built the "Zhongshan Building" in Yangmingshan. The area's active sulfur geothermal system posed a huge challenge to the building structure, but with her superb skills and persistence, she made the Zhongshan Building a great feat in Taiwan's architectural history.

In addition, she also built a modern community "Garden New Town" in Xindian Shanlin, which is not only a breakthrough in architectural planning, but also reflects her vision of an ideal living environment. Today, Garden New Town is still an ideal place to live in the minds of many people.
