Located on Chengdu Road in Ximending, Taipei, the Ximen Red Building was built more than a hundred years ago. It was originally the first officially built public market in Taiwan and is now the oldest and most complete Grade III historic market building in Taiwan. The Ximen Red Building is an octagonal building made of red bricks, and the roof is supported by an umbrella frame made of steel pipes. This unique design was conceived by Japanese architect Juro Kondo, whose young and bold creativity uses the "Bagua shape" as the market entrance and the "cross shape" as its main feature. The octagonal building and the cross building that are currently known to everyone, together with the north and south squares on both sides, are collectively called the "Ximen Red Building".
