Shangri-La Far Eastern Taipei: A "Hidden Gem" Experience at a Classic Luxury Hotel

When it comes to Shangri-La Far Eastern Taipei, its location is not exactly prime. Unlike hotels in the Xinyi District that are close to iconic landmarks, this hotel requires a bit of a walk from the nearest MRT station, which might be inconvenient for travelers relying on public transportation and seeking easy access. Upon entering the hotel, the first impression is its "low-key and dim" style—lacking the bright and open modern feel. The overall space is dominated by dark wood tones and heavy decor, paired with dim lighting, creating a strong vintage atmosphere throughout the lobby, hallways, and even the rooms. Even during the day, natural light is scarce, making the visual experience somewhat oppressive. A revamped lighting design could undoubtedly breathe new life into the space!

Originally booked for an upgraded 101-view room, I was instead assigned a lower-floor room of the same type due to a rushed check-in. The limited view from the window made it hard to spot Taipei's iconic landmarks. The room itself is indeed spacious, with a fully equipped living room, bedroom, and bathroom. Marble countertops and leather sofas exude the elegance of a classic five-star hotel, but the old-fashioned TV, retro furniture, and patterned carpet instantly transport you back to the early 2000s. The modern design and tech-savvy features that younger guests might expect are almost entirely absent. While the bathroom is large, the lack of a wet-dry separation design makes the user experience less than ideal.

However, holding an Amex Centurion card brought an unexpected perk! Guests can enjoy a $150 credit, which can be used at the hotel's Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant "Shang Palace" or for afternoon tea at the executive lounge. The culinary delights somewhat compensated for the shortcomings of the stay. Overall, this hotel is best suited for travelers who appreciate classic brands and a steady, vintage ambiance. If you're looking for trendy designs and convenient transportation, you might want to explore other options!
