My dining experience at Wu Lao Guo in Taipei was truly satisfying and full of surprises. The highlight was the unlimited free refills on the duck blood and tofu, completely dispelling the typical impression of frugal hot pot restaurants and allowing for a hearty meal.
Environment and Service
The restaurant boasts an elegant, Chinese-style ambiance with modern, minimalist design, making it incredibly comfortable to sit down. The service was efficient, especially when it came to the duck blood and tofu; it arrived immediately, without a single word of delay.
Signature Features
- Duck Blood: The duck blood is tender and perfectly braised, yet not overly salty or overly pungent. I kept coming back for more.
- Tofu: Absorbed by the broth, the tofu is chewy and fluffy, with each bite bursting with broth.
Broth Flavor
I ordered the Healthy Hot Pot, a stew of Chinese medicinal herbs that offers a refreshing sweetness without being heavy, perfect for dipping meat or seafood. My friends at another table ordered spicy hot pot and shared some with me. The spiciness was fragrant but not overpowering, and it was a perfect match with the duck blood.
Ingredients
- Meat: The short ribs were beautifully marbling, tender and juicy after being cooked, with a slightly creamy texture. The lamb slices were not overpowering, with a unique umami flavor that went well with rice.
- Seafood: The white shrimp were fresh and chewy, retaining their sweetness even after cooking. The clams were large and plump, and the addition of them to the pot enhanced the broth's flavor.
- Vegetable Platter: Refreshing and light, the herbal broth perfectly balanced the richness of the meat.
### Overall Experience
Wu Lao Guo truly showcases the sophistication and generosity of Taipei's hot pot culture:
- The all-you-can-eat duck blood and tofu are a great value
- The meat and seafood are incredibly fresh
- A wide selection of broth bases, allowing you to customize your taste
I walked out of the restaurant feeling full and happy. For me, this is a must-try hot pot restaurant worth returning to, and I'll recommend it to friends.
