National Palace Museum (NPM)

Located in the Shilin District of Taipei, the National Palace Museum houses one of the world’s largest collections of Chinese imperial artifacts. Established in 1965, the museum’s origins trace back to the Forbidden City in Beijing. During the Chinese Civil War, approximately 4,800 crates of the most valuable pieces were relocated to Taiwan by the Republic of China government to safeguard them from conflict.
• Collection: The museum boasts nearly 700,000 artifacts spanning over 8,000 years, from the Neolithic period to the Qing dynasty.
• Highlights: Among its most celebrated treasures are the Jadeite Cabbage, a delicate jade carving featuring insects camouflaged in leaves; the Meat-Shaped Stone, a piece of banded jasper resembling braised pork belly; and the Mao Gong Ding, a bronze vessel with the longest known inscription from the Western Zhou dynasty.
• Architecture: Designed by architect Huang Baoyu, the museum reflects traditional Chinese palace architecture, aligning with the vision of then-leader Chiang Kai-shek.
