Shirahige Shrine on the shores of Lake Biwa

#SeptemberDestinations2025
From Kyoto, take a train to JR Omi-Takashima Station. Bicycle rentals are available near the exit. The ride takes about 20 minutes to Shirahige Shrine. However, be extremely careful and cautious, as there's a large road in front of the shrine, and some cars can drive very fast. The road separates the shrine from the torii gate, so be sure to exercise caution when traveling to and from the shrine!

According to records, Shirahige Shrine is located northwest of Lake Biwa in central Shiga Prefecture. With a history of approximately 2,000 years, it's the oldest shrine in Shiga Prefecture. Its deity is Sarutahiko no Mikoto, who has been revered since ancient times as the white-bearded deity of longevity.

I came here for the vermilion torii gate. The contrast between the vermilion gate and the turquoise waters is truly unforgettable! On the way back, I cycled along the lakeside. Lake Biwa's vast expanse resembles an ocean, and the gentle breeze blew in. Although I seemed lonely, I was actually enjoying the experience!
