Kumano Kodo, which spans across Wakayama Prefecture, is a historic pilgrimage route that has been walked by many worshippers since ancient times. It is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the stone-paved paths and moss-covered torii gates in the deep forest create an atmosphere that feels like a time slip to ancient Japan.
The representative routes include 'Nakahechi' and 'Kohechi', offering various courses for beginners to advanced hikers. Along the way, you can visit the three grand shrines: Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Nachi Taisha, and Kumano Hayatama Taisha, each offering a sense of history and mythology.
Access is somewhat inconvenient, but you can take a bus from Kii-Tanabe Station or Shingu Station. There are also hot springs along the route, allowing you to relax and rejuvenate during your pilgrimage.
