① Lake Mashu No. 1 Observation Deck (Omote Mashu)
This is a standard spot for sightseeing at Lake Mashu, where you can enjoy the vast lake and the Mashu blue all year round. There is also a rest house and a shop, and there are plenty of limited edition sweets and souvenirs.
[Access] From JR Mashu Station, take the Akan Bus to Lake Mashu No. 1 Observation Deck for about 25 minutes, and get off at the last stop. By car, it takes about 2 hours from the Akan IC on the Doto Expressway via National Routes 240, 241, and 243, and Prefectural Route 52. Parking is 500 yen for a regular car (April to November).
② Lake Mashu No. 3 Observation Deck
This is the highest point on Lake Mashu, and the impressive view overlooking Kamuishu Island up close is its charm. Recommended for those who want to enjoy the scenery quietly. Please note that the road is closed in winter.
[Access] From JR Mashu Station, take the Akan Bus to Memanbetsu Airport for about 53 minutes, and get off at the No. 3 Observation Deck (seasonal operation only).
③ Uramashu Observatory
Located on the north shore of the lake, it is low in altitude and close to the lake surface, so you can feel the Mashu blue up close. It is ideal for taking photos on sunny days with little fog. There is a shop and toilets.
A hidden spot with few people!
[Access] It is convenient to use a car, about 2 hours via the Eastern Hokkaido Expressway. Public transportation is a little inconvenient, so a rental car is recommended.
Each observation deck on Lake Mashu has its own unique charm, and it is easy to access by bus or car. Be sure to visit each of the spectacular spots!
