Kussharo Lake, located in Akan-Mashu National Park in Hokkaido, is Japan's largest caldera lake, covering an area of approximately 79.7 square kilometers (Reference: Japan Ministry of the Environment, "Overview of Akan-Mashu National Park"). Renowned for its dreamy and magnificent sea of clouds, my visit here left me in awe of nature's artistry.
The Spectacle of the Sea of Clouds
The sea of clouds at Kussharo Lake often occurs in the early morning when the lake's water temperature meets the surrounding cold air, creating a mist that drapes over the lake like a delicate veil. From the Tsubetsu Pass Observatory, you can gaze down at the mist flowing between the lake and Wakoto Peninsula, with Mount Mokoto faintly visible in the distance, resembling a fairyland. According to the Hokkaido Tourism Organization, the best time to view the sea of clouds is during autumn (September to October) and between 4 to 6 a.m., with clear and windless weather offering the highest chances (Reference: Hokkaido Tourism Organization website).
Viewing Experience
Tsubetsu Pass is the prime spot for observing the sea of clouds. At an elevation of 947 meters, it offers a panoramic view of Kussharo Lake and the distant Shiretoko mountain range. Driving there in the early morning, you pass through coniferous forests, arriving as the sky begins to brighten. The sea of clouds rolls like waves, leaving you breathless. The observatory has parking and basic facilities, and it's recommended to bring warm clothing as morning temperatures often drop below 10°C. For relaxation, the lakeside Sunayu Onsen provides a unique experience of soaking in hot springs after witnessing the sea of clouds.
Travel Tips
It is advisable to drive or join a guided early morning sea of clouds tour. The road to Tsubetsu Pass is narrow, so exercise caution. Check the weather forecast in advance to avoid thick cloud cover that may obstruct the view. Kussharo Lake is about a 20-minute drive from Mashu Lake and Mount Io, making it ideal for a day trip. Bring a camera and tripod to capture the fleeting beauty of the sea of clouds.
The sea of clouds at Kussharo Lake is like a dream, immersing visitors in a picturesque scene. The tranquility of the morning and the flowing mist make this natural spectacle an unforgettable highlight of the trip.
