Overseas Hotel Sharing | Tokyo K5 Hotel

♦ The K5 Hotel was formerly a bank building constructed in the 1920s, which survived the bombings during World War II. It has now been transformed into a boutique hotel by the Swedish design firm Claesson Koivisto Rune. Claesson Koivisto Rune renovated the building’s structure while fully respecting its original appearance and features. One major challenge was converting the parking lot at the back of the original building into a hotel facade, where stained glass windows bring in external light, creating shifting patterns of light and shadow inside.

♦ As a new hotel model of a micro-complex, all rooms, restaurants, bars, and social spaces in the K5 Hotel are designed based on the “aimai” concept. This Japanese word is used to positively describe ambiguity, vagueness, or fuzziness. It inspired a layout that replaces walls with furniture, textiles, and plants to create more subtle separations. Modern details and furniture help brighten the aged but characterful interior of the building, while the plants aim to create a sense of an urban oasis.
