If Tokyo feels too fast-paced or too crowded… why not start your morning somewhere quieter and full of old-school charm?
Just 30 minutes from Ueno or Asakusa, you’ll find Shibamata (柴又) — a nostalgic neighborhood straight out of Japan’s Showa era. No crowds, no noise, just good vibes and golden morning light 🌞
🎬 First stop?
As soon as you exit the station, you’ll be greeted by a statue of Tora-san, star of the famous Japanese film series “Otoko wa Tsurai yo”. Locals say touching his right foot brings good luck… maybe it’s true — I felt instantly happy here!
🍡 Stroll down the retro shopping street
Candy shop full of old-school Japanese sweets
Toy stores with childhood classics (yes, I bought a Doraemon bamboo-copter 🌀)
Quirky little souvenirs, like the golden poop keychain (you’ll know it when you see it 😆)
And don’t miss the local favorite: grilled eel (unagi) rice!
🍁 Explore further
The walk leads you to a peaceful park, a traditional garden, and even the Tora-san Memorial Museum — grab a free sightseeing map from the station, no need for intense planning.
⏰ Time needed: Around 3 hours — enough for a slow stroll, photos, snacks, and a relaxed lunch. Then hop back to Tokyo for your afternoon shopping spree!
📍Access:
From Ueno or Asakusa: 30 mins via Keisei Line to Shibamata Station

If you’re up early in Tokyo and don’t know what to do before the stores open… this might just be your perfect peaceful detour 💫
