Take a walk to "Shōin Shrine" located in Setagaya Ward, Tokyo 🚶
This shrine honors Yoshida Shōin, an educator and thinker who lived during the late Edo period ⛩️
Yoshida Shōin is well known from Japanese history classes for the Shōka Sonjuku academy, where he taught without being bound by social status or class 🥸
Among his students were notable figures such as Takasugi Shinsaku, who founded the Kiheitai militia, and Itō Hirobumi, the first Prime Minister who contributed to the establishment of the Meiji government. The academy is famous for producing many historical figures.
On the shrine grounds, there is a building that recreates the Shōka Sonjuku academy, and Yoshida Shōin’s grave is also preserved!
The stone stairway approach surrounded by greenery is wide and well maintained, and at the end of the path stands a magnificent main shrine building 👀 The current main shrine was constructed around 1927, and the original shrine building now serves as the inner sanctuary.
Surrounded by a solemn and calm atmosphere, this historically rich shrine weaves the life story of Yoshida Shōin, who lived through the turbulent late Edo period 😌
*Along the stone stairway approach, there is also a bronze statue of Yoshida Shōin, so be sure to check it out when you visit ☑️
