【Zoshigaya Kishimojin Summer Morning Walk】
⛩️ Kishimojin Temple
☀️ Seasonal Events: Summer Market July 6-8, Kishimojin Bon Dance July 18-19. Enjoy traditional Japanese festival stalls and celebrations.
🏖️ Atmosphere/Facilities: Kishimojin is a deity of safe childbirth and child-rearing, and is also worshipped as a guardian deity of the Lotus Sutra at Nichiren sect temples.
According to the "New Edition Musashi Fudoki-ko" (a geographical record of Musashi Province compiled during the Bunka and Bunsei periods, 1804-1829), the statue of Kishimojin enshrined at Zoshigaya Kishimojin Hall was excavated in 1561 (Eiroku 4) at Seido (now Seido Kishimojin Hall). Initially, it was housed at Toyobo, a sub-temple of Homyoji Temple (later Daigyo-in), but when a hall was built by the people of Zoshigaya Village in 1578 (Tensho 6), it was enshrined there. The current main hall of Zoshigaya Kishimojin was built in 1664 (Kanbun 4) through the donation of Jisho-in, the wife of the second lord of Hiroshima Domain, Asano Mitsumasa, and the aino-ma (connecting room) and worship hall were added in 1700 (Genroku 13). Since then, it has flourished as one of Edo’s famous spots, attracting faith from samurai to commoners.
The precincts include Bukko Inari Shrine, Hōfudō Hall, and a 700-year-old ginkgo tree designated as a natural monument by Tokyo Metropolitan Government. On July 25, 2016 (Heisei 28), Zoshigaya Kishimojin Hall was designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan (Tangible Cultural Property - Building).
