Meiji Jingu Shrine in Tokyo is one of Japan's most iconic shrines. Built in 1920, it primarily enshrines Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken, and symbolizes a crucial period in Japan's modernization. The shrine's vast grounds lie within the bustling Harajuku and Shibuya neighborhoods, but upon entering the shrine's forest approach, one experiences a tranquil atmosphere distinct from the city. Many of the trees within the grounds are donated from across the country, and over centuries, they have grown into a lush, verdant "artificial forest," now serving as a vibrant green haven in the heart of Tokyo.
Every New Year, Meiji Jingu is Tokyo's most popular Hatsumode (Hatsumode) destination, where millions gather to pray for peace and prosperity in the new year. The shrine is conveniently located within walking distance of Harajuku Station on the JR Yamanote Line and Meiji-jingu-mae Station on the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line or Fukutoshin Line.
As you walk through the wooden torii gates and along the long gravel approach to the main hall, you'll experience a solemn and awe-inspiring atmosphere. In addition to the main shrine, the grounds also boast a treasure hall and gardens. Spring and summer bring vibrant flowers and trees, while autumn and winter bring autumn foliage and New Year's festivals. For visitors, Meiji Jingu is not only a center of religious faith but also a unique opportunity to experience the fusion of Japanese culture, history, and nature.
