Bingbingbei is located northwest of Shibanyan Town, Linzhou City, Henan Province. The water here is warm in the harsh winter and cold and frozen in the midsummer. Every year, as winter turns to spring and the grass regenerates (in March), the area begins to freeze and can last up to five months.
After the Mid-Autumn Festival in August, when the air seems to cool, the ice here begins to melt. The peak of the ice age happens to be the height of summer, when the dog days of summer are full of sweat. As soon as you step into this precious land, you will be immediately struck by the cold air, which is biting to the bone.
Yet, in the depths of winter, a trickle of water slowly flows from the cracks in the rocks. Steam rises, the water is gentle, and the grass along the stream flourishes, causing the nearby peach trees to sprout and bloom prematurely. This reversal of seasons is why the ancients called it a summer resort where "winter and summer are reversed." Because the cave is located on the shady slope of the mountain, locals call the shade of the mountain "back," hence the name Bingbingbei.
The warm temperate continental monsoon climate means the water is warm in winter and freezing in summer, making it suitable for travel in all four seasons.
