Tongguan Ancient City | Explore a Historic Town II

|Explore a Historic Town II. Tongguan Ancient City is located at the junction of Shaanxi, Shanxi, and Henan provinces, where the Yellow, Wei, and Luo rivers meet. It is backed by the Qinling Mountains to the south, the Yellow River to the north, the Huashan Mountains to the west, and the western Henan Plain to the east. It has been the eastern gate of Guanzhong since ancient times, and many important battles have taken place here, such as the Battle of Tongguan between Cao Cao and Ma Chao, and the Battle of Tongguan during the An Lushan Rebellion. After years of construction, the ancient city has formed a unique military defense system and architectural style.
Tongguan Ancient City was built in the second year of the Tang Dynasty, and there are few records of its construction in the annals. From its ruins, it can be seen that it starts from the west bank of Yuanwanggou in the east and extends westward through Chengbei Village to the east bank of Jingou. It is surrounded by ditches on the east and west sides, and the terrain is flat and wide. During the Northern and Southern Dynasties, Yuwen Tai defeated the Eastern Wei general Dou Tai here. Emperor Min of Zhou, Yuwen Jue, changed the name of Tongguan to "Tonggu Pass."
