Wat Phra That Nong Bua was built in 1955 by Mr. Fong Sitthitham, a former Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives who was a native of Ubon Ratchathani. He built the temple in his rice field to be a place for practicing Vipassana meditation by Phra Ajahn Dee, Phra Yanwisit Samitthiwirajarn (Sing Khantayakomo). It covers an area of 50 rai. The temple was built on the auspicious occasion of the half-century of Buddhism, 1957, while Mr. Fong Sitthitham was imprisoned in Ubon Ratchathani Central Prison on charges of internal rebellion. The people responsible for requesting land to build the temple were Mr. Thongpoon Yuwamit and Mr. Aun Waihong. They led the group to visit Mr. Fong at Ubon Ratchathani Central Prison. Napfong was happy to donate this land to the temple even though he was in prison.

Wat Phra That Nong Bua, Ubon Ratchathani Province, is the location of Phra That Chedi Sri Maha Bodhi or Phra That Nong Bua, a large chedi modeled after the Buddha Gaya Chedi in India, the place where the Buddha attained enlightenment. It was built in 1957 to symbolize the 25th century of Buddhism. Inside the chedi are relics of the Buddha for people to pay homage to.
