Gandantegchinlen Monastery (also known as Khorloogiin Temple) is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery located in the center of Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, not far from Sukhbaatar Square, directly opposite the Shangri-La Hotel.
The monastery was built between 1904 and 1908 by more than 300 skilled craftsmen led by the famous architect Oombo.
Gandantegchinlen Monastery is a national first-class protected cultural relic unit, housing more than 6,000 exhibits representing Mongolian history, cultural heritage, and religious traditions. Among them, 77 exhibits are listed in the "Unique Historical and Cultural Monuments of Mongolia" directory.
The monastery also houses a large number of precious religious instruments, Shamanic dance masks, Thangka paintings, and 226 volumes of handwritten Tengyur brought back from Tibet by the last Great Khan of Mongolia, as well as a complete set of 108 volumes of the Kangyur photocopies. These collections are important materials for studying the history and culture of Tibetan Buddhism.
