Located at the tip of Dorsoduro in Venice—where the Grand Canal meets the Giudecca Canal—Punta della Dogana occupies the historic customs house (Dogana da Mar) built between 1677-1682 by architect Giuseppe Benoni. After years of decline, it was restored by renowned architect Tadao Ando under the patronage of collector François Pinault and opened as a contemporary art museum in 2009.
Inside, Punta della Dogana serves as one of the venues for the Pinault Collection, presenting large-scale temporary exhibitions of contemporary art in an architectural setting that combines raw brick walls and minimalist concrete interventions. The triangular plan of the building remains unchanged, punctuated by the iconic golden globe and statue of Fortuna atop its tower.
Whether you’re drawn by contemporary art, Venetian architecture or simply an iconic waterfront location, Punta della Dogana offers a unique cultural stop. It’s best paired with a stroll along the Giudecca Canal or a visit to the neighbouring Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute for a fuller experience.
