Wat Si Muang, Vientiane

Wat Si Muang

Built in 2106 during the reign of King Sai Setthathirat[1], this temple is the location of the city pillar. There is an old story that it is related to a woman named Si, who was pregnant and sacrificed her life with her unborn child and a horse. She was the guardian spirit of the Vientiane city pillar. Therefore, the name of the woman Si was used as the temple's name, "Wat Si Muang". The people of Vientiane call the woman Si as "Grandmother Si Muang". Every year before the merit-making ceremony at Pha That Luang, a merit-making ceremony must be held at Wat Si Muang first.

Ms. Sakura said that Thai people often come to pay their respects, make wishes, and make vows. Those who are into spiritual beliefs must come here.
