The Wakkanai Port North Breakwater Dome in Wakkanai City, Hokkaido, was built in the early Showa era at the location of the Wakkanai Ferry (North Pier), which transported passengers from trains to boats crossing to the former Karafuto.
The North Pier faces the sea, and the purpose of the North Breakwater Dome was to protect the roads and railways from wave splashes.
The design was by a young engineer who had only graduated from Hokkaido University three years earlier, but he successfully created a unique building that has protected the safety of many people and has been preserved to this day as a symbol of Wakkanai.
It is the number one tourist spot in Wakkanai, and is a place you should definitely visit.
