Xi’an City Wall is China’s most complete and best‑preserved ancient city wall, originally built in 1370 and completed in 1378 under the Ming Hongwu Emperor on the foundations of earlier Sui and Tang fortifications . It stretches approximately 13.74 km around the old city center, standing about 12 m high with a top width of 12–14 m and a base width of 15–18 m . The wall encloses roughly 14 km² and features four main gates—South, North, East, and West—along with 98 ramparts positioned at strategic intervals to house soldiers and artillery  . As a National Historical and Cultural Unit since 1961, it’s also on UNESCO’s Tentative List for the “City Walls of the Ming and Qing Dynasties” .
