Because Xiamen's Gaoqi Airport is located on an island, planes fly low over city buildings and natural landscapes during takeoff and landing, creating some stunning images. Furthermore, Xiamen's "airport + sea + island + city view" combination is truly unique in China, so many photography enthusiasts and aviation enthusiasts flock to various locations near the airport to photograph aircraft.
📍 There are several photo spots for photographing aircraft in Xiamen. The one I visited was on the overpass outside Exit 1 of Gaoqi Subway Station. Stand on the overpass toward Dianqian and wait for a plane to pass by, so you can capture it quickly. From this direction, you can see the entire side of the aircraft and the airline logo.
Other good photo spots include Minnan Chaotian Temple, Qingshui Temple, and Dianqian Street's "Airplane Alley."
🕐 The recommended time for photography is between 5 PM and 6 PM. The light is softer during this time, and sunset is approaching, making the city streets and aircraft beautifully lit by the setting sun.
🛩️ For flight times, check the exact arrival and departure directions on VariFlight.
📷 For photography, I recommend a camera with a telephoto lens (a 70-200mm lens is sufficient) and use continuous shooting mode. A phone is also acceptable, though the zoom won't give you the same quality as a still camera, but it's still a good choice for capturing live action and videos.
Gaoqi Airport has served Xiamen for over 40 years and is expected to relocate to Xiang'an Airport next year. Before then, take advantage of this soon-to-be-disappeared view to capture some stunning scenery!
