Exploring the stunning architectural heritage of Gulangyu Island 🏘

Gulangyu is a tiny island off the coast Xiamen, which was one of the five original treaty ports opened to trade with the West at the end of Opium Wars in 1842.
In the 1860s many of the Western missionaries and merchants moved to Gulangyu island, where they built schools, churches, hospitals, consulates, hotels, and residences.

Traces of the history are still left today; the island is in fact still hosting hundreds of beautiful historical buildings, now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
