Tianzi Mountain

#mytraveldiary

Tianzi Mountain (天子山, Tiānzǐ Shān) is a stunning natural reserve in Zhangjiajie, Hunan Province, China.

It’s part of the Wulingyuan Scenic Area (武陵源), in Wulingyuan District, Zhangjiajie City.

The name Tianzi means “Son of Heaven.” The mountain is named after a Tujia tribe leader, Xiang Dakun, who rebelled during the late Southern Song dynasty and declared himself “Tianzi.” After his defeat, the locals honored him by naming the mountain after him.

The peaks are made of quartz sandstone. The formations have been sculpted over hundreds of millions of years by erosion, weather, and tectonic activity.
