Kichijoji is the birthplace of the second Jodo sect patriarch Chinzei Shonin, and is said to have been founded in 1217.

The adjacent Kichijoji Park, which opened in 1998, has a lawn plaza and an observation deck.

In late April, wisteria flowers cover the temple grounds like a canopy, dyeing them white and purple.

The three Noda wisteria trees in particular are about 160 years old and are designated as Kitakyushu City's preserved trees.

The "Wisteria Festival" is held to coincide with the anniversary of Chinzei Shonin's founding and the peak viewing time for the wisteria flowers. During the festival, the area is bustling with many outdoor stalls, and many people visit from not only the neighborhood but also from outside the city.
