🀍 Selected by the 2025 Columbus Guide

Heukyujae, a Yangpyeong cafe, is conveniently located near Sonobel Yangpyeong. Enter the Heukyujae courtyard, a striking blend of a 20-year-old hanok building and modern design. The spacious, museum-like courtyard, unified by gray stone, harmonizes with the cafe building.

Before entering Heukyujae Cafe, a sticker next to the door reads, "Korea's Best Coffee Shops in 2025," and it's a Columbus Guide. A coffee-loving friend recommended this cafe after visiting it first, so I'm excited.

πŸ–€ Counter Ordering

Open the door and you'll find three paths. The left path on the first floor leads to the Muyeong Space, the middle staircase leads to the Yuyeong Space on the second floor, and the right path leads to the drink counter.

To order your drink, head to the right. The counter, with its black interior and soft lighting, creates a calming atmosphere, reminiscent of a bar. It's a fitting concept for Heukyujae.

🩢 Drinks

Heukyujae Cafe also has its own signature drink. The Gaegunmyeon Cornus officinalis & Omija Ade, the Red Bean Spener with red beans, and the Black Stream Latte with black sesame all feature stunning visuals.

I'm always torn. Whenever I visit a local cafe, I'm tempted to try their signature drink, but I'm also drawn to the desire to savor the full coffee flavor. Ultimately, I settle on a latte. One thing's for sure: if a cafe offers a great latte, its other coffee drinks will be equally delicious.

While there aren't many kid-friendly drinks, my elementary school-aged children each ordered a plum smoothie. It's a blend of plum and yogurt powder, perfect for kids. It's a generous portion, even a nine-year-old couldn't finish, so even adults had a chance to try it.

Heukyujae offers a unique Ssanghwacha (Korean ssanghwa tea). I was about to order the signature Ssanghwa, wondering why it was so expensive, but the staff kindly explained that it was a cocktail. It's a long way to get there, so I didn't order one. But if you're staying in Yangpyeong, it's a great place to visit for a cocktail in the evening. :)

🀍 Dessert

Heukyujae's signature dessert is yanggaeng (sweet bean jelly) in various flavors. Can you sense the traditional flavor within the modern cafe?

The yanggaeng, known for its rich flavors thanks to its reduced sugar content and generous use of ingredients, offers a wide variety of flavors. There are classic flavors like black tea, chestnut, and mugwort, as well as fruit flavors like strawberry, blueberry, mango, and tangerine. The beautiful shapes make them perfect gifts.

I was so full after the meal that I couldn't order dessert, but Heukyujae's yanggaeng is a visually appealing dessert, making it a great gift. In addition to yanggaeng, they also offer round orandas.

πŸ–€ 1F Muyeong Space

The interior of Heukyujae is a black and white affair. The first floor, Muyeong Space, exudes a sense of calm with its black interior, featuring a mix of sitting and standing tables in the center. The black dΓ©cor of the first-floor counter seems to be a nod to this theme.

On either side of the center are tables that seat one to four people side by side, all facing the windows. Each table is separated by a black curtain, creating a private feel despite the open layout. It's a perfect place to block out prying eyes.

🩢 Photo Spot: Stairs to the 2nd Floor

The stairs leading to the 2nd floor, which resembles the 3rd floor, are a subtle yellowish hue, a contrast to the black of the 1st floor and the white of the 2nd floor. This cozy nook and cranny exudes a warm atmosphere!

Long mirrors, each height matching the height of the stairs, are placed on the walls. They're a great way to check your current appearance and create a photo opportunity. They also offer a quick check of your hat, your clothes, and your face.

🀍 2nd Floor Swimming Space

The 2nd floor swimming space, with its bright white interior, contrasts with the black of the Muyeong space, which depicts the water beneath the surface of the Heukcheon River. The bright, sparkling water surface contrasts with the bright, sparkling water beneath the surface. So, unlike the first floor, which blocks out the view of others, the second floor is entirely open.

The windows were covered with paper curtains due to the strong sunlight, making it difficult to see outside, but the green hues and cool, flowing river water peeking through the white paper reminded me that it was summer outside.

If you prefer a quiet, private space, choose the Muyeong Space on the first floor. If you prefer a bright, open space, choose the Yuyeong Space on the second floor. :)
