Yangshuo Sugar House healed my restless month~

As the plane began its descent, the view shifted from an aerial perspective to a horizontal one, revealing the undulating karst landscapes stretching endlessly outside the window.

In the northern cities, winter had already arrived, with autumn seemingly slipping away in just one fleeting afternoon. Over the past month since my surgery, my emotions have fluctuated along with the temperature. I needed a place—a place where I wouldn't have to deliberately seek out beauty, peace, and joy, but could naturally feel them. And Sugar House was precisely my destination.

Even if you've never been here or even heard of it, you can probably imagine the scene: graceful and gentle mountains rolling in the distance, the Li River winding like a green ribbon quietly passing by at your feet. Sugar House is situated right here. The ground-level structures retain the industrial imprints of the old sugar factory, with the hotel's exterior and interior design penned by architects Dong Gong and Ju Bin, respectively.

You can clearly sense how their creations foster a dialogue here—between the new and the old, industry and nature, humanity and wilderness, all interwoven seamlessly. It's not hard to understand why this place is so beloved both domestically and internationally. In an era where many things tend toward homogeneity, people—at least some—still yearn to witness something unique.

The story of Sugar House goes far beyond the transformation of a building; it is a vivid practice of integrating Chinese aesthetics into nature.

The staff here also left a deep impression on me. I particularly appreciated their attention to detail—if they had worn the crisp uniforms typical of branded hotels, it would have created a sense of alienation, clashing with the vibe of this place. Thankfully, they were dressed in relaxed and appropriate sweatshirts, naturally bridging the gap between them and the guests.
