I visited the Adachi Museum of Art, which doesn’t really look like an art museum. It was also the first time I saw the aesthetics of a Japanese garden displayed as an exhibit. It was so beautiful that it was eye-opening. No wonder it has been ranked as the most beautiful garden in Japan for 22 consecutive years!
The Adachi Museum of Art is located in the suburbs of Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture. It is actually quite remote. If you don’t drive there, you have to take a train first and then transfer to a bus. The museum’s collections focus on two main themes: famous Japanese gardens and works by Yokoyama Taikan. Experience the beauty of Yokoyama Taikan's works through the garden aesthetics that Japan is most proud of.
The museum garden covers an area of 165,000 square meters and is composed of small gardens of different styles. The green gardening and the white dry landscape form a soft abstract contrast, and the green and white complement each other to form a perfect scenery.
The park includes: dry landscape garden, moss garden, white sand pine garden, pond garden, wooden crane waterfall, and an exhibition hall where indoor window frames are integrated with garden landscape. Windows of different sizes perfectly frame the beautiful views, just like a frameless art gallery.
