Located in Yasugi City, Shimane Prefecture, the Adachi Museum of Art is a must-visit destination. While the museum primarily showcases Japanese paintings and ceramics, its main attraction is the expansive Japanese garden that spans approximately 50,000 tsubo (about 16.5 hectares).
The museum operates under the philosophy that "gardens are also paintings," and its meticulously maintained gardens are a testament to the skill of expert gardeners. Featuring diverse styles such as the dry landscape garden and the white sand and green pine garden, these gardens transform beautifully with the changing seasons, offering visitors a unique experience year-round.
Remarkably, the Adachi Museum of Art has been ranked as Japan's number one garden for 22 consecutive years in the Japanese Garden Rankings. It has also been featured in travel magazines worldwide, attracting numerous international visitors.
On the day of my visit, the weather was perfect with a cloudless sky, making the garden's refined beauty even more breathtaking. It's easy to see why people from all over the world would want to experience this stunning scenery. I found myself completely captivated by the magnificent views.
Inside the museum, you'll find an impressive collection of works by Yokoyama Taikan, a leading figure in modern Japanese painting and a key contributor to the development of the Nihon Bijutsuin (Japan Art Institute). This makes the museum a treasure trove of attractions both indoors and outdoors.
Personally, I was particularly struck by the corridor displays featuring open-frame windows, which embody the museum's philosophy that "gardens are also paintings." This innovative design added a fresh perspective to the experience. The Adachi Museum of Art is undoubtedly a must-see spot during any trip to Shimane.
