The Wanfotang Grottoes are located on the north bank of the Daling River, 9 kilometers northwest of Yixian County in Liaoning Province. As of 2015, they are the earliest and largest grotto complex in Northeast China, and also the northernmost and easternmost grotto complex among the Northern Dynasties grottoes in China. The Wanfotang Grottoes were founded during the Northern Wei Dynasty. Due to years of natural weathering and lack of maintenance, most of the grottoes have been damaged and collapsed, no longer existing. They are acclaimed as a treasure trove of stone carving art in northern China, and the Wanfotang Grottoes are also a scenic area that integrates cultural landscapes with natural scenery. In 1988, it was designated as a national key cultural relics protection unit.
