As the easternmost inhabited archipelago in China, this is your ultimate destination to catch the first ray of sunlight! This concise guide will help you make the most of Dongji.
🚢 How to Get There
Starting Point: Zhujiajian Wugongzhi Pier, Zhoushan. During peak season, be sure to book tickets at least 3 days in advance via the "Zhoushan Haixing Ferry" WeChat public account!
Route: Take a ferry for about 2 hours directly to Miaozihu (the main island), then transfer to a boat to Qingbang Island or Dongfushan Island (about 20-40 minutes).
🏝️ Recommended Key Islands
1. Miaozihu Island (Main Island): Best facilities, filming location of "The Continent." Must-visit is the popular lighthouse with panoramic views of the deep blue bay—perfect for photos! The island sightseeing shuttle (88 RMB) saves time and effort.
2. Dongfushan Island: The peak of Dongji, home to the first dawn light of the new century. Hike around the island (about 4 hours) to challenge yourself, enjoy the sea and sky merging, and experience the authentic fishing village atmosphere.
3. Qingbang Island: Known as the "Potala Palace on the Sea," featuring a striking cluster of abandoned stone houses built along the mountain. With minimal light pollution, it’s an excellent spot for stargazing and capturing the summer’s magical blue tears!
🏠 Accommodation Tips
Many guesthouses are available on each island, mostly near the piers. During peak season (May to October), book early! Sea view rooms cost about 300-600 RMB per night. Dongfushan and Qingbang Islands offer simpler conditions, focusing on the experience.
🦐 Must-Try Seafood
Tigerhead fish tofu soup (incredibly fresh!)
Mussels (green-lipped mussels)
Various seasonal seafood noodles/stir-fried rice cakes
Supplies are hard to transport to the islands, so food prices are slightly higher—bring some snacks.
📌 Key Tips
Weather is king: Ferry schedules are easily affected by wind and waves, so keep your itinerary flexible and monitor shipping notices.
Sun and wind protection: Strong UV on the islands, windproof jackets are essential.
Cash backup: Some small stalls and ferry ticket surcharges require cash.
Bioluminescent sea: Blue tears mostly appear in summer (June to August) on dark, light-pollution-free nights—rare and magical.
The beauty of Dongji Island lies in the ultimate meeting of sea and sky and its secluded tranquility. When the first golden light of dawn breaks through the clouds and shines over the boundless East China Sea, you’ll understand that all the travel hardships were worth it.
