The Meishan Reservoir is located in the heart of the Dabie Mountains, at the junction of Hubei, Henan, and Anhui provinces, on the upper reaches of the Shi River, a tributary of the Huai River. It sits south of Jinzhai County, Anhui Province, known as the "Hometown of the Red Army and Cradle of Generals." Located on the upper reaches of the Shi River, the dam site is situated between the Greater and Lesser Meishan Mountains in Meishan Town, Jinzhai County, Anhui Province. Located 130 km north of the Shi River's confluence with the Huai River, the project is a large-scale water conservancy and hydropower project primarily focused on flood control and irrigation, with additional benefits such as power generation. Construction began in March 1954, with the main structure of the multi-arch dam essentially completed in January 1956. Reservoir storage began in 1958. The reservoir, designed for multi-year regulation, has a flood control capacity of 1.065 billion cubic meters, a designed irrigation area of ​​255,300 square hectares, and an installed capacity of 400 MW.
