Introducing Mozitan Reservoir

The Mozitan Reservoir is located on the Dongliu River upstream of the Fuziling Reservoir in Huoshan County, 25 kilometers from the Fuziling Reservoir dam site. Its controlled drainage area covers 570 square kilometers. The reservoir dam is a concrete heavy-head dam, also known as a double-buttress concrete rib dam. The dam is 82 meters high and 331 meters long, consisting of 12 double buttresses, three single buttresses on each bank, and a gravity dam at the west bank transition section.

The dam crest is 202.9 meters high, the wave wall is 204 meters high, and the total reservoir capacity is 337 million cubic meters. The spillway, located on the west side of the dam, has a bottom elevation of 196 meters and six openings, each 10 meters wide, controlled by radial gates. A reinforced concrete-lined spillway tunnel with an inner diameter of 5.7 meters and an inlet bottom elevation of 132.7 meters is located at the west end of the dam. The east bank powerhouse has an installed capacity of 16,000 kilowatts and an annual power generation capacity of 58 million kilowatt-hours. To improve the flood control standards of the Fuziling Reservoir and fully develop its water resources, the construction of the Mozitan Reservoir was decided. In September 1956, tunnel excavation began. Dam foundation clearing, workshop layout, and sand and gravel quarrying also began. In December of the same year, the Ministry of Water Resources approved the dam's concrete pouring. On June 9, 1958, the dam's concrete was poured to the top. The hydropower station was connected to the grid and began generating electricity in December 1959, and was fully completed in January 1960. The entire reservoir project was completed in 1968.

The completion of the Mozitan Reservoir improved the flood control capabilities of the Fuziling Reservoir, regulating runoff to irrigate the Pihe River irrigation area alongside the Fuziling and Xianghongdian Reservoirs, achieving comprehensive benefits. In July 1969, torrential rains caused flooding that overtoppled the dam. Before the 1970 flood season, the eroded bedrock behind the dam was reinforced. Following heavy rains in Henan Province in August 1975, while strengthening and raising the Fuziling Reservoir to expand its flood discharge capacity, it was determined that the Mozitan Reservoir would require further dam heightening and expanded flood discharge facilities.
