West of Su'ao Town in the northwest of Pingtan County, a large, disc-shaped reef stands on the sea. It supports two monument-shaped sea stacks, one high and one low, creating the overall appearance of a large sailing ship. The two boulders resemble billowing sails, seemingly sailing through the wind and waves. This is Pingtan's famous natural landscape, Shipaiyang, also known as the "Double Sail Rock."
These are the largest pair of granite sea stacks in China, primarily controlled by two sets of vertical joints and one set of arcuate horizontal joints. Over a long period of geological history, intense spherical columnar erosion and weathering have occurred along these joints, causing the weathering crust to peel off layer by layer. The two pillars today represent the fresh cores of these weathered exfoliations. On Kan'ao Beach, across from Shipaiyang, a series of over 60 incredible spherical sea-eroded rock formations remain, including pictographic figures like Maitreya Buddha, a frog looking up to the sky, and a double-turtle arch bridge. These structures, deeply analyzed and fossil-like, reveal the movement of the layers of magma, making them highly valuable for both viewing and scientific research.
