Located in Niuzhai Village, Haikou Town, Fuqing City, about 10 kilometers from the county seat, Maitreya Rock, formerly known as " Ruiyan Dandong , " is a scenic spot boasting both cultural and natural wonders. Within the area, jagged rock peaks, sometimes crouching, sometimes suspended, sometimes separated, sometimes joined, offer a myriad of stunning formations.
At the foot of Maitreya Rock, a towering stone Maitreya Buddha sits cross-legged. The carving began in the Zhizheng year of the Yuan Dynasty ( 1341 AD ) and was completed in the Hongwu year of the Ming Dynasty ( 1368 AD). The statue, 6.8 meters tall and 8.9 meters wide , was carved from a single block of granite. Its natural appearance, with bare chest and abdomen, ears hanging down to the shoulders, and a charming smile, can make viewers forget their worries.
