Once the largest artificial freshwater lake in Asia, it is known as the " Asian Heavenly Lake " and serves as a natural water level regulator for the Han River.
The source and headwaters of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project's Middle Route in Xichuan are renowned for their rich cultural history. The area submerged by the Xichuan Reservoir is Danyang, the ancient capital of the Chu State. Qu Yuan penned many of his poems here during his exile, including the Battle of Danyang, described in "The Lament for the National Revolution," which took place here.
The reservoir's banks are home to a cluster of ancient tombs dating back to the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period. Over 7,000 precious artifacts unearthed from 25 Chu tombs document Shunyangchuan's former prosperity. Among them, the chime bells unearthed from the tomb of Zigeng, the Chu governor, are among the finest sets of such bells unearthed in China. The bronze ban, designated as the national jade, and the imperial flute, among other artifacts, reflect the region's rich history and flourishing civilization dating back thousands of years.
Xiangyan Temple, one of the four ancient temples in Henan Province on the bank of Danjiang River, has added a brilliant pearl to the tourist area. The majestic ancient building complex is hidden among the ancient cypresses and green trees from the mountainside to the foot of the mountain. It is elegant and mysterious, with hidden beauty everywhere.
