Shajiang Town boasts a long history and beautiful scenery. In ancient times, the seashore was so sandy that it melted with the tides, earning it the name Shaqia. In the Dongwuyang Neijiang River, Zhujiang Island stands tall in the middle of the river, creating a picturesque scene with vibrant mountains and shimmering waters, hence the name Shajiang. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, it was designated the Sixth District in 1950. During collectivization in 1958, the Sixth District was divided into Shajiang and Xinan, now the present Communes. In August 1960, it was renamed Shajiang District. The district was abolished in August 1966, and the Commune Management Committee was restored. In April 1968, it was renamed the Revolutionary Committee. In December 1980, the Revolutionary Committee was abolished and the Management Committee was restored. In August 1984, it was renamed Shajiang Town.
The Shajiang River, also known as the Dachong River, is a secondary tributary of the Yongjiang River and the second largest tributary within the county. Its main source is the Batang River, with six major tributaries (including the Sitang River) converging from north to south. The Batang River has three sources: the eastern source at the western foot of Paixian Mountain, the central source at Jiutang Guxi and Gudi, which converge at Jiutang, and the western source at the eastern edge of Baizao, which converges at Nahui. The three sources converge at Batang, forming the Batang River. The Batang River becomes the Shajiang River after entering Wutang. The Shajiang River flows from east to west, passing through Wangzhu, Liangshan, and Youai, before entering Sitang Township at Hejiang. It then turns south and joins the Sitang River near Baogai, entering Changtang Township and flowing into the Yongjiang River near the Dachong River estuary.
