Introducing Fangcheng Minglou

Fangcheng Minglou is a tower-style building in front of the tombs of the Ming and Qing emperors. It has a square city platform at the bottom and a Minglou at the top, with a temple and posthumous stele in the middle.

This style originated at the Ming imperial mausoleum in Fengyang, Anhui. The mausoleum had three inner and outer walls, with four gates in the middle, like towers, known as the north, south, east, and west Ming towers. Starting with the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum in Nanjing, the structure shifted to a single Ming tower. The subsequent Ming and Qing imperial mausoleums largely followed the square city and Ming tower design of the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum (with the exception of Emperor Daoguang, who did not construct a Ming tower). The lower part, a square platform built of bricks and stones, was the "square city," while the upper part, a double-eaved, hip-and-gabled stele pavilion, was the "Ming tower."

Introduction to the Fangcheng, Minglou, and Baoding: The Fangcheng and Minglou were both architectural innovations pioneered at the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum. The Fangcheng is a massive stone structure located in front of the Baoding, with a rectangular plan. North of the Fangcheng and Minglou is the Chongqiu, approximately 400 meters in diameter, which is the Baoding, also known as the Treasure City. This was the sleeping quarters of Zhu Yuanzhang and Empress Ma.
