Introducing Rouge River

Located approximately 4 kilometers west of Lishui District, Nanjing, the Yanzhi River is an artificial canal excavated on Yanzhi Hill during the Ming Dynasty to connect the Qinhuai River and Shijiu Lake. It stretches approximately 7.5 kilometers from Honglan Port in the south to the Qinhuai River in the north.

Over the Yanzhi River, a massive rock rises high in the air, spanning the cliffs on both sides. This is the ingenious "Natural Bridge" designed during the excavation of the canal. When the Yanzhi River was excavated, the craftsmen cleverly left two of the highest and hardest rock sections as bridges, then bored holes underneath the rocks to allow for boats. This is how the famous Natural Bridge came to be. According to the Lishui County Chronicles, "The surface of the massive rock was left as a bridge over the river, and a hole more than ten feet long was bored in the middle to allow for boats. The bridge was built according to the terrain, hence the name Natural Bridge." The Natural Bridge is 34 meters long, 9 meters wide, 8.9 meters thick, and 35 meters high. Leaving a stone bridge across a canal is a rare sight in China and abroad, and it has become a major wonder of Lishui.
