Hu Xiaoshi (1888-1962), originally from Jiaxing, Zhejiang, grew up in Nanjing. His given name was Guangwei, his courtesy name was Xiaoshi, and his pseudonyms were Qianyin, Xialu, and in his later years, Shagong and Zixia. He was a philologist, historian, poet, and calligrapher. He began his studies under Li Ruiqing, and, beginning with the literature of the Yin, Zhou, and Jin dynasties, achieved a profound level of mastery in seal, clerical, and regular scripts. He also authored A History of Chinese Calligraphy.

The Hu Xiaoshi Memorial Hall was opened to the public at the end of 2004. It covers an area of ​​20 mu and has a main building area of ​​1,300 square meters. It imitates the architectural style of Nanjing in the Republic of China. The west side of the main building is the base. The inscription was written by Zeng Zhaolun, a descendant of Zeng Guofan. The museum has a total of 210 pieces of calligraphy and letter paper donated by Hu's relatives and family.
