Introducing Chongzheng Academy

Chongzheng Academy is located on a hillside at the eastern foot of Qingliang Mountain in Nanjing's Gulou District. It faces Saoye Tower from afar. Restored in 1980, it was originally built by Geng Tiantai, then Minister of Revenue during the Ming Dynasty, while serving as an Inspector of Education in Nanjing. Geng lectured there, but after his death, the academy was destroyed. Geng's younger brother converted it into an ancestral hall. Later, during the Qing Dynasty, a monk named Zhanxi converted the hall into a temple.

In 1980, the Nanjing Municipal Government allocated funds for the reconstruction of Chongzheng Academy. Professor Yang Tingbao, a renowned architectural expert from Southeast University, personally oversaw the design, and the project took two years to complete. According to records, "upon entering the gate, to the left is the abbot's residence, to the right is the gentry's community, and further in, the lecture hall. Thirty school buildings circle the east and west."

In 1992, the "Chinese Stone Museum" was added to the academy, displaying thousands of rare natural stones from all over the country, representing over 100 types of stones, adding new cultural connotations to the ancient scenic spot. In 2003, the "Chinese Stone Museum" moved to a new building at the foot of the mountain.

Climate and best time to travel

Boasting a subtropical monsoon climate, the academy is divided into three sections, following the mountain's slope. The first and second halls are connected by two corridors, each featuring a variety of stained glass windows. Two stone tablets are embedded in the east wall. Between the second and third halls lies a broad bluestone platform, with a small landscape scene to the east. The third hall is the highest point in the park, offering panoramic views of the surrounding lush greenery and a hundred-mile-wide panorama. It is a suitable place for a visit in all seasons.

Entering the hall of Chongzheng Academy, four large murals are eye-catching, recreating the four seasons of Jinling: Niu Shou in spring, Zhongshan in summer, Qixia in autumn, and Shicheng in winter.
