The Gong Xian Memorial Hall (Gong Xian's former residence) is located southwest of Qingliang Mountain in Nanjing's Gulou District. Built in 1664, it features a brick structure in the Ming and Qing dynasty style and covers an area of ​​approximately 270 square meters. The origin of the name "Saoye Tower" stems from historical records from the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, in which Gong Xian painted a self-portrait depicting him as a monk sweeping leaves, hence the name. During the Xianfeng period of the Qing Dynasty, the building was destroyed by fire. In 1889, it was rebuilt by order of Emperor Guangxu, and was subsequently renovated in 1901 and 1914.

The three characters "Qingliang Mountain" (Qingliang Mountain) are inscribed on a stone plaque centered at the entrance to the Gong Xian Memorial Hall over 300 years ago by Gong Xian, the occupant of this place. Gong Xian (1618-1689), also known by his pen name Banqian and his pseudonyms Yeyi (also known as Chaizhangren and Banmujuren), was a native of Kunshan, Jiangsu Province. He was a patriotic painter and poet with a strong sense of national integrity in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, known as the foremost of the "Eight Great Masters of Jinling." He began painting at the age of thirteen, during the late Ming dynasty, when class and ethnic conflicts were at an all-time high. At twenty-one, he traveled to Nanjing to join a poetry society, criticizing the society of the time. Later, seeking a living, he traveled to Yangzhou and then to Hai'an. In 1664, Gong Xian returned to Nanjing and built the "Banmu Garden" at the foot of Qingliang Mountain, where he lived a secluded life, avoiding the glittering and the powerful, leading a simple and secluded existence. His primary focus was painting, primarily depicting the authentic mountains and waters of the Nanjing area.
