Introducing Saihongqiao

Saihong Bridge, located southwest of Jiqing Gate and north of the Saihong Bridge Interchange, spans a tributary of the Qinhuai River. Built during the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty, this three-arch stone bridge, formerly known as Saigong Bridge and Saigong Bridge, originally faced the Xunxiang Gate of the Ming Outer City Wall. It is now a protected cultural relic in Nanjing.

Legend has it that when Ming Taizu Zhu Yuanzhang built the capital, the Ministry of Works and Yingtian Prefecture were tasked with carrying out the project in sections. After Yingtian Prefecture completed its construction, it had funds left, so it built a stone bridge there. It was named Saigong Bridge, meaning "better than the Ministry of Works." Later, to avoid being insulted by officials, local officials renamed it Saihong Bridge, inspired by a line from the Tang Dynasty poem "Fu on Afang Palace" by Du Mu: "A long bridge lies on the waves, yet no clouds form a dragon; a double path stretches across the sky, yet no clouds form a rainbow." It's also known as Saigong Bridge and Zhahong Bridge. Rebuilt during the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, Saihong Bridge is over 50 meters wide, with water-dividing piers over 60 meters long and arches 8.95 meters high. It can still carry eight tons today. Its width is unprecedented among Nanjing's ancient bridges.

In 1947, the Saihongqiao Defense Battle Memorial Tower was built next to the bridge. In 2003, the Saihongqiao Interchange, named for its proximity to the bridge, was completed. The interchange runs from the Shuiximen Elevated Road in the north, connects to Fengtai South Road in the south, Zhongshan South Road in the east, and Yingtian West Road in the west. It includes projects such as the Fengtai Road widening, the Fengtai Road Shunhe Bridge, and the Jiqingmen Tunnel. The Saihongqiao Interchange is not only the largest fully connected, two-way interchange in Nanjing's urban construction history, but also the largest in China. With a total investment of 1.2 billion yuan and a total area of 132,600 square meters, the interchange stretches 10 kilometers, with a 39-meter-wide, six-lane, two-way asphalt road. The bridge itself has 486 piles, and the interchange is 23 meters high, four stories high, about the same height as an eight-story building.

Climate and best time to travel

With a subtropical monsoon climate, Saihong Bridge offers a panoramic view of distant mountains, nearby waters, high walls, rivers, and urban scenery. Climbing up the zigzag vertical supports to the ten-story main span of the Shuangqiaomen Interchange, you can see the bridge, which is set against the backdrop of the modern interchange. It is another excellent place to overlook the ancient capital of Nanjing and is suitable for travel in all seasons.
