The Jinling Scripture Printing House is located on Huai Road in the core area of Nanjing City. It is an ancient place behind the Erlang Temple in Nanjing's downtown where Buddhist scriptures are carved on wooden boards and printed by hand. It was once the former residence of Yang Renshan, a Buddhist scholar in the late Qing Dynasty.
Today, the Jinling Scripture Printing House is China's only remaining sutra printing institution and cultural heritage center for woodblock prints of Buddhist scriptures. It is also the world's only center for publishing Chinese-language woodblock prints of Buddhist scriptures. The extant sutras retain the traditional craftsmanship of engraving, including watermarks and thread-bound envelopes. The majority of Buddhist scriptures recited in temples across the country originated here.
