Jingxiang Study is located west of the Zanhua Pavilion in the Wanhua Garden scenic area of Slender West Lake. Rebuilt in 1992, the three-room, south-facing study features blue brick and tiled roofs, a typical Qing Dynasty architectural style. The inscription "Jingxiang Study" is a lacquer book by Jin Nong, the leader of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou, a master of poetry, prose, calligraphy, and painting. Jin Nong was particularly adept at painting plum blossoms, stating, "Plum blossoms without snow lack spirit, while snow without plum blossoms is vulgar."
Surrounded by dark-black ridges and whitewashed walls, the pleasure boat is half-full, the pavilion half-full, and the beauty chair at the moon-shaped entrance is only half-full, breaking the symmetry of the old garden and lending it a light and lively feel. Couplets flanking the main entrance are inscribed by Zheng Banqiao, another of the Eight Eccentrics: "The soaring tower is halfway up the clouds, the study is nestled among bamboo trees." Inside the study, a carved wooden frame depicting pine and plum blossoms, an altar screen and vase on a long table, a desk filled with study treasures, a multi-treasure shelf displaying thread-bound ancient books, and a round table filled with a game of Go, invite you to pause and ponder, leaving you with an indelible aftertaste.
In 1993, the "Qingyin Garden" designed based on the Jingxiang Book House participated in the "Chinese Garden" exhibition at the Stuttgart Expo in Germany. With its distinctive national characteristics and unique construction concept, it won the "Golden Cup Award" and was permanently preserved in Germany.
The subtropical monsoon climate is breathtaking. Entering the courtyard, you'll find a lotus pond in front of the library. A stone boat is half submerged, a painted boat is only half submerged, a small pavilion is half submerged, and a half-sized beauty chair at the entrance to the moon cave is also half submerged. This unique design exudes individuality and is a perfect place for a trip in all seasons.
The four characters "Jingxiang Shuwu" (Jingxiang Book House) beneath the eaves are a collection of Jinnong's calligraphy, characterized by their slender form, thick horizontal strokes and thin vertical strokes, and elegant left-falling and hook-falling strokes. The ink is jet black, resembling lacquer, hence the name "lacquer calligraphy." Looking north, the majestic Qiling Pagoda towers majestically atop Shugang Hill. Looking back toward the study, lush bamboo and tall trees frame the pavilions and buildings.
It is recommended to play for about 1 hour.
