Linggu Pagoda, the tallest and most beautiful eight-sided, nine-story pagoda in Nanjing, is constructed of reinforced concrete and Suzhou Jinshan granite. Originally known as the Memorial Tower for the Fallen Soldiers, Linggu Pagoda was built in 1931 as a key component of the War Memorial Complex. Designed by Mao Fei and Dong Dayu, its graceful, elegant, and dignified form, imbued with national style and characteristics, has been highly praised by people from all walks of life.
The tower's interior and exterior walls are inlaid with bluestone steles. Each of the tower's eight sides has four doors and four steles. The tower contains 28 steles. Twelve steles on the second, third, and fourth floors bear the full text of "Premier Sun's Farewell Address at the Whampoa Military Academy on His Journey North," dated November 3, 1934. This is the standard cursive script of Yu Youren, a veteran of the Kuomintang, written in July of that year.
