Approved by the State Council in December 1997, the Funiu Mountain National Nature Reserve in Henan Province is a forest ecosystem nature reserve, primarily protecting the transitional zone's integrated forest ecosystems, rare and endangered species, precious tree species, and their habitats. The Funiu Mountain National Nature Reserve marks the boundary between China's subtropical and warm temperate zones. It serves as the watershed for China's three major river systems, the Yangtze River, the Yellow River, and the Huai River, and the source region of the Huai River. As a nature reserve with significant conservation value, the reserve boasts the largest natural forest area, the highest forest coverage rate, the largest forest stock, the richest flora and fauna, numerous rare species, and a complete and stable ecosystem.

The ancient Sanya Road, a major transportation route, runs through it. Historically, Funiu Mountain is most famous for the story of Zen Master Zizai of the Tang Dynasty. The Song Dynasty's "Biographies of Eminent Monks" mentions him, but does not mention the miraculous deeds of Funiu. I speculate that the name Funiu Mountain is related to Master Zizai. "Funiu" is a common metaphor in Zen Buddhism, using "ox" to represent the mind, and "Funiu" means to subdue one's own mind. "Funiu" and "Zizai" are related in meaning. The widely circulated "Ten Oxen Diagram," depicting the process of spiritual practice, likely originated from this. During the Ming Dynasty, Funiu Mountain was also known for its monk soldiers.
